What is the Mental Health Support Service?

Middlesbrough Mind offers a free and confidential one-to-one Mental Health Support Service. The service is provided in a planned and structured way and offers a maximum of 8 weekly support sessions. Each session will last for about 45 minutes.

The purpose of the Mental Health Support Service is to offer an opportunity for people to explore a particular difficulty that they are experiencing with their mental health.

Who is the service for?

The service is for Middlesbrough residents (aged 18 and over) who are experiencing mental health problems or emotional distress, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Emotional difficulties
  • Psychotic symptoms

You do not need to be referred to us by anyone else or to have a formal diagnosis of a mental health problem to use our service.

What does the service involve?

The service involves working with the same worker on a one-to-one basis for each of your weekly sessions.

We can also organise for an interpreter to be present at the sessions if you feel this would be helpful.

During the sessions our worker will help you to look at ways you can cope by using the skills that you already have and also by exploring new techniques that can provide different ways of coping. We may ask you to practice these techniques outside of the sessions so you are confident you can use them on your own in the future. Throughout the time you work with us, we will keep a check of the good effect the work is having, so that you can see the improvements you are making.

We will also provide you with a follow-up support session about 2 months after your sessions are completed. During this session you will meet up with the same worker and go through anything again that you feel you may need to.

How do I access the service?

This is easy to do.

You can:

We will then arrange a time to meet up with you. At this first meeting we will go through an assessment process. This is to make sure that the service meets your needs and will help in your recovery. Once we have agreed this, we will start working together as soon as we can. If there is a waiting list we will let you know how long you may have to wait for your first session.

When is the service available?

The service is usually provided during office hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays – but we can meet at other times if needed.

Where is the service?

The service is on the first floor at 47 Grange Road, Middlesbrough. We can arrange a different venue for people who use a wheelchair or find it difficult to climb stairs – just let us know.

This service is supported by the Northern Rock Foundation and Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust.
