Carers’ Support Service
This is a service for Middlesbrough residents who support or care
for an adult family member or friend with a mental health problem.
Am I a 'carer' of someone with a mental health problem?
Often parents, partners, family members or friends of someone with
a mental health problem do not see themselves as carers. However,
carers are people who provide unpaid practical and/or emotional
support to someone with a mental health problem. You may or may
not live with the person you care for. The term ‘mental health
problem’ describes common mental illness such as depression
or severe and enduring illness such as schizophrenia or bi-polar
disorder (manic depression).
Who can use the service?
If you live in Middlesbrough and you provide help and support for
an adult (18-65 years) with a mental health problem, then you can
use this service. The person you are supporting does not have to
be receiving services themselves.
Where is the service available?
The carers’ support workers can see you at the Middlesbrough
Mind office in Grange Road, at the Community Mental Health Resource
Centres at either Parkside or Lakeside (Hemlington), at the Middlesbrough
Carers' Centre, at St Luke’s Hospital, or at home. Carers’
support workers can also offer support over the phone.
What can the Carers Support Service offer you?
Middlesbrough Mind employs two carers’ support workers who
provide:
- One-to one, confidential emotional support
- Practical help
- Advocacy
- Information and advice
- Support groups
- Signposting to other organisations
The service is usually available Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, but
we can also be flexible to meet your needs.
